It far exceeded what I expected based on everything I’d heard, and all I had to do was turn off objective markers! The exploration alone carries this game and, regardless of some misgivings I had about boss encounters, I can’t come away feeling anything but satisfied. This game may have some rough edges, but I am floored by how good the exploration is. Once you have most power-ups and the world really opens up, there’s an insane amount of places to go and, with waypoints turned off, I got that lovely sensation (that Mark Brown of Boss Keys waxes poetic about) of just stumbling into whole new areas and main suit upgrades. Now, don’t get me wrong-I’m not saying this is right for everyone, and it’s great they have that there as an optional aid for those who need it to really enjoy the game, but turning them off turns the game into this wonderfully complex (heh, pun), labyrinthine, and incredibly non-linear exploratory experience. ![]() What really irks me about this in general, as it’s something I see come up with other games as well (like complaints that Prime is too easy when reviewers leave hints on), is that the complaints about navigation being too easy are entirely fixable! Just turn off the objective markers and “blue line”.
